Start by knowing clearly where you are
When using Google Maps to find your way……
…do you ever choose some random place you aren't instead of starting from where you actually are?
I’m sure the answer is no. It certainly would be very odd behaviour.
Yet, so many businesses develop their business, brand, marketing, and comms strategies without knowing where they are in their market, in relation to their competition, and in the minds of their potential customers.
You must know where your business is to work out how you get to where you are going.
Here are some really useful things to get you started;
- How do you orientate around the needs of category buyers better (or worse) than your competition?
- How salient is your brand/product/service? (do you come to mind without prompting?)
- Do people know who you are when being prompted?
- How preferred are you in relation to your competition?
- Are you making yourself easy to find and buy?
- What is your market share?
- What is your share of voice?
There are now many economical ways to find out and keep on top of this stuff.
